Key Witness Provides Testimony Leading To Conviction Of Driver Involved In Hit And Run While Under The Influence.

By drinking and driving, a driver is putting everybody on the road in unnecessary danger. When your ability to drive safely is impaired, the chances of being in an accident increase dramatically. For those unfortunate enough to be involved in a car accident with a drunk driver, a personal injury lawsuit may be the only way for a family to begin recovering from their economic losses and get outstanding medical bills paid. That is why plaintiffs should rely on an experienced personal injury attorney as the person who can help guide them through the complicated litigation process.

Leticia Suri was a passenger in a truck driven by Robert Velazco in June 2014 when he slammed into Alex Rodas, while he was on his scooter, after blowing past a red light in West Miami which caused the victim to suffer massive brain trauma.  Before Mr. Velazco peeled off, Ms. Suri jumped out of the truck and flagged down a Miami-Dade police officer, leading him to Mr. Velazco’s home. Ms. Suri later provided video testimony of the accident which helped a jury convict Mr. Velazco in November of driving under the influence and leaving the scene of an accident involving serious bodily injury. On Tuesday, he was sentenced to 20 years in prison.

The victim’s wife told the judge that the father of three had extensive injuries in the immediate aftermath, including brain trauma and broken bones, and half the nerves in his face remain destroyed. He can also no longer work as a bar back at a salsa club and isn’t sure he’ll receive government medical assistance moving forward. Mr. Velazco, who has more than 20 prior convictions, including 11 for cocaine possession, did not apologize to the victim. But he did manage to mouth “f— you” to a police officer seated in the front row.
